labyrinthine surreal funny mysterious ... haunted
I adore this film. It is made by a Polish director with Polish actors based on a Polish novel but the look of the film is decidedly Spanish surrealism. Its a film best watched late at night when one is most receptive to surrealisms night time agenda which speaks to and from the subconscious illogic of dreams. Each storyline vanishes into another storyline until characters from separate storylines begin to appear together as the various storylines wind around each other like snakes round the limb of a tree--an oft repeated visual in the film. The opening sequence follows a soldier during the Napoleanic Wars as he takes refuge in a house where he finds the Saragossa Manuscript full of surreal drawings and stories. This book fascinates its reader so much the deafening sounds of the surrounding battle disappear as he begins to read...A Spanish Count with two escorts rides through deserted foothills towards a mysterious Inn. All around the Count are clues, pieces of stories that will later...
A Film Like No Other
Having read the book twice , I was quite prepared for the journey of Alphonse Van Warden in the high mountains of Spain and the many characters that he encounters, but don't let that stop you from joining him on his wild and often perplexing journey. The film is as truthful to the book as can be expected (but alot had to be trimmed to even make this 3 hour cut), and much of the horror, mystery, confusion, and romance is still present. Unfortunately my favorite stories of the wandering Jew are absent, but you still have the stories of Don Toledo, Busqueros, The hermit, Pasheko, and so many others brought to life before your eyes.
The disc looks wonderful, video is in a stunning 2x1 black white anamorphic video taken from Wojciech Has' original and only complete print of the film. Some washing can be seen in the begining outdoor shots but this can also be from the original lighting. Burn marks are still evident for signifying the reel changes but this does not take away from the...
an unexpected gem
The best reason to hunt around Amazon's mechanism of suggestions and consumer referrals is the hope of chancing upon some little treasure that eluded critical mass on initial release. Saragossa Manuscript is a wonderful movie of unique personality; the closest comparison that comes to mind would be if Fritz Lang had ever made a version of Dangerous Liaisons. It sports an impressive list of supporters and admirers. Not as mystically mindblowing as its advertisement suggests, it is certainly nonlinear and somewhat surrealistic in a gently poetic manner, which is a hell of an accomplishment.

Essential viewing for the Hip-Hop generation...
I first saw this in the theater with virtually no prior knowledge about it's contents. Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed. This DVD is a must have for anyone with even a passing interest in DJ culture. A history lesson awaits. This is an excellent product, outlining the evolution of the DJ- from the birth of the break (Kool Herc) to the modern madness of the turntablist. This is an excellent, well-constructed and very entertaining film. Even if you are not into Hip-Hop, chances are you will enjoy this documentary. If you are, I'm sure you have already seen this, if not, BUY IT NOW! This is in my top three all-time documentaries, with 'Dogtown' and 'Freshest Kids'. This is essential viewing for all hipsters.

Good documentary, but came up short in the trenches..
This is a good documentary and I can appreciate that it was done since none of the pioneers put one out(like Crazy legz did for Freshest Kids). This documentary is more towards the general audience that don't have any knowledge of DJ'in or hip hop. But us old school guys won't get much out of it.

It focused more on the current DJ's rather than the history. They could have given the pioneers in NY alot more time, and then included the pioneers from California, and Miami. Starting off in L.A. with Joe Cooley, Dr Dre., Uncle Jamms ARmy, Unknown DJ etc. Then move up to Northern California would have been nice to see something about Cameron Paul, the IMAGINE Battles, then they could have brought in QBert. Qbert was on here, but there was no mention of the IMAGINE battles in the San Francisco bay area during the 1980's, im sure these battles where part of Q-Bert's inspirations. Back to Miami, they could have shown Gigilo Tony, MC ADE, Magic Mike, etc. these DJ's from the 80's...
Somewhat average if not insulting on certain levels....
This dvd/vhs is a subpar at best. The fact that someone on here stated," that after the old school(pre-83)Djin started dyin out?!" Its obvious the director didnt really know anything about djin until he saw Qbert at one of these turntablist venues. The fact that you give the pioneers Bambaataa,Kool Herc,Dxt,Theodore, and Jazzy Jay a meager 20 minutes let alone ommit Grandmaster Flash,Charlie Chase,Whiz kid, Scratch on Galaxy, Knights of the Turntables, to name a few is ridiculous! How the hell can you skip dam near 10 years of Djin and go right to Qbert! Wheres the Mixmaster Ice scratch? Howie Tee? Marly Marl?,the Kday mix show Djs?(Julio G,Dr.Dre,Joe Cooley,Aladdin or Uncle Jams Army?( keith Cooley, Dj Pooh,etc..) Oh my God,one the most influencial scratches ever was the Transformer scratch! and that was given as a out take not seen in film with Cashmoney and Jazzy Jeff, like it wasnt important enough or revelant to todays turntablist. Being from the west coast, there is...

Fascinating topic... Less than satisfying film... Saved by DVD Extras
This is a documentary on the rather nebulous topic of stupidity. It's a subject holding great promise which unfortunately this 77-minute film does not quite fulfil. The film is more a diatribe against the stupidity that has become an integral part of American culture than an indepth analysis of the subject. The interviews with thinkers, writers, and commentators, people like Noam Chomsky, Bill Maher and Avital Ronell, are reduced to short soundbites, while the rest of the film is filled with a constant stream of silly antics that sadly represent what constitutes much of American media today. The ideas put forward by the interviewees are tantalising and often fascinating but they are sadly not fleshed out. The problem begins with the very definition of stupidity. How would you define stupidity? As one interviewee, Giancarlo Livraghi, puts it, often a genius may be labelled "stupid" because his ideas are ahead of his time. Why does America venerate stupidity? Is stupidity inherent in...
Stupidity
Stupidityexcellent review, There are various legacies people elected to this office leave, including e.g. the 1st president, the 1st catholic president, the 1st black president. President 43 GWB has the dubious accolade of being the 1st MORON elected President of the USA.

It's alright I guess..
It's an okay film. Bits of it were interesting, and I generally identify with the left-of-center orientation of it, but I didn't think it was a particularly well-made film. I think my expectations were heightened by the presence of names like "Noam Chomsky" and "Bill Maher" in it, but in actuality, their comments were marginal in the film. Even the "extended interviews" weren't really all that "extended." Also, I expected better picture and sound quality than offered.

The origins of words like "idiot" and "moron" are explored; footage of drunk people acting stupid is shown; the harm our stupidity is causing to our planet is noted; the dumbing down of the public by business interests is briefly discussed; and that's it. It was somewhat entertaining, so I wouldn't call it a waste of time. But it's not a "must see" or "must own" film either.

Ridiculous nonsense
Most of our founding fathers were NOT christians, and we have documented evidence that some of them even ridiculed christianity. We have personal letters of various founding fathers (Jefferson, Adams, etc.) and even official government documents(1st Amendment, Treaty of Tripoli, Article VI, etc.)that emphatically declare that the US was in no way founded upon christian principles. In founding this nation, the founding fathers relied heavily upon early Greek models of philosophy and democracy, the secular philosophy of contemporary European thinkers, as well as the learned, secular minds of the founding fathers themselves. It was not unusual for politicians to invoke God in their speeches and writings. But you would have to be operating from a quite juvenile understanding of history to imagine that our founding fathers meant for this to be a christian nation. . Even today politicians give lip to God without any demonstrable meaning behind it. A perfect example of this is Franklin...

Really?
Why would you list this under Children and Families? Disgusting. Save your crap propaganda for another section, maybe labeled 'Fables and Foolishness'.

A good film for a rainy day.
Not bad. Good pacing, the scares and odd things begin quickly, and the acting is believable. The end is too abrupt and unfinished....and not in the typical ambiguous way of a horror film. This just ends.

entertaning classic well done
This is ok creepy movie no copy cat movie no held hand camera crap no annoying crying or screams its just get down to the point I like it it was not boring

The acting was great. Its a low-budget film but despite that was pretty creepy. Its a good story but lacked big scares and kind of leaves you hanging in the end.Other than that, its finally nice to see a horror movie with good acting for a change.
